During the past several weeks, as talk turned toward Thanksgiving and the upcoming holidays, I began to think about the many things there are to be grateful for, and was reminded of one of my favorite hymns, “Come, Ye Thankful People, Come.” It, in some ways, reflects the blessings in our community.
Come, ye thankful people, come,
Raise the song of harvest home;
all is safely gathered in,
ere the winter storms begin.
God our Maker doth provide
for our wants to be supplied;
come to God’s own temple, come,
raise the song of harvest home.
There is no doubt that this year has presented its share of challenges for many who are struggling with financial issues, health concerns, or other circumstances that weigh heavily on them. I am thankful that we, as a community, continue to come together to ensure that all are “safely gathered in” and to provide support and services to our most vulnerable residents.
The “Warwick 13” is a coalition of our local non-profit, social service agencies that are working with the city to create a streamlined, friendly system to provide critical support to residents in need. All together, their services reach people from all walks of life. The directors of these agencies, their boards and staff continue to inspire me with their enthusiasm, dedication and perseverance. Every day, they are determined to leave the world a little better than they found it.
Local businesses, too, have proven time and time again that their companies are not merely located in Warwick, but that they are active and invested members in our city. It would be impossible to count the many ways they have supported community events, fundraising efforts, our schools, and even individuals and families who suddenly find themselves in difficult circumstances.
Our hardworking city employees and Warwick’s faith organizations, civic groups and neighborhood associations are the final critical parts of the network that keeps our community strong and vibrant, ensuring that all are safe and our needs and wants supplied.
On this Thanksgiving, I am grateful to be part of a place that continually shows its spirit of friendship, compassion and community.
Best wishes for a happy, safe and memorable Thanksgiving.
