Hawks continue winning ways

The Bishop Hendricken baseball team ran its record to 3-0 with two victories in the second week of the season. The Hawks beat longtime baseball rival Cranston West 11-3 last Wednesday and topped Cumberland 8-0 on Friday.

Cranston West and Hendricken are the only teams that have won state baseball championships in the past 11 years, and their first meeting in 2014 was predictably close until a late burst by the Hawks. On the strength of a strong start by sophomore Matt Kennedy, they led 4-0 in the sixth but watched West score three runs to get within one. In the top of the seventh, though, the Hawks broke the game open with seven runs, and West couldn’t generate another comeback. Senior Ryan Rotondo had four hits and two RBI to lead the Hawks.

On Friday, Anthony Graziano tossed six scoreless innings and Mike McCaffrey pitched the seventh as the Hawks shut out Cumberland. Dante Baldelli led the offense with two doubles and four RBI.

Dating back to last season, when the Hawks went undefeated during their league slate, Hendricken has now won 21 consecutive regular season games. Going back a year further, Hendricken has won 37 of its last 39 Division I league games.

Hendricken was set for another key match-up on Monday, as it hosted La Salle. Results were unavailable at press time.

Pilgrim gets victory

After narrowly missing a win over South Kingstown last Tuesday, the Pilgrim volleyball team seized its next chance without much trouble. The Patriots blew past Exeter/West Greenwich 3-0 for a much-needed victory, their first of the season.

Rob Quaine led the Pats with eight kills and Phil Nemirow added four blocks for Pilgrim, who easily won by lopsided scores of 25-8, 25-9 and 25-11.

Pilgrim is now 1-3 in Division I and will host a Chariho team that has the same record on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.
