Hawks escape SK with win to close out season

It wasn’t quite as easy as the discrepancy between the teams’ records indicated it would be, but the Bishop Hendricken football team still managed to get by South Kingstown on Friday night.

Playing in their Division I regular season finale, the Hawks rushed for 233 yards and three touchdowns en route to a 29-22 victory. They also threw for a touchdown in the win.

Hendricken finished up its season at 7-1 and is the No. 2 seed in the playoffs. It will take on third-seeded Portsmouth on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Hendricken in the D-I semifinals, as the Hawks begin their quest for an unprecedented fifth straight Super Bowl championship.

With a win over the Patriots, Hendricken would reach the Super Bowl for the eighth time in nine years and the sixth straight season.

Top-seeded La Salle is taking on No. 4 Cranston East in the other D-I semifinal on Friday night.

Vets suffers another setback

Warwick Vets’ tough year on the gridiron continued on Saturday, as it lost 40-20 in a non-league, Division II crossover game.

The ’Canes, who finished 0-7 in D-II-A, dropped to 0-10 on the season. There is still plenty to play for, however, as Vets will close the season out with two rivalry games.

First, it will play Toll Gate in a non-league contest at home on Friday night at 6 p.m. After that, it will take on Pilgrim in the annual Thanksgiving Day game at 10 a.m. on the road.
