Hawks lax suddenly playing like contenders

A 15-1 loss to La Salle on May 6 had the Bishop Hendricken lacrosse team at rock bottom.

Three games later, Hendricken has good reason to dream big. The Hawks won all three games, including key ones against second-place Barrington and fourth-place Moses Brown.

Hendricken is now 5-4 and alone in third place in Division I. If it defeats North Kingstown today, it will finish as the No. 3 seed.

The Hawks disposed of Portsmouth 16-4 on May 9, then edged Moses Brown – which had beaten Hendricken 12-9 earlier in the season – 10-9 last Tuesday. Hendricken then kept the good times rolling with an 11-9 win over Barrington on Sunday. The Eagles had only one prior loss, to La Salle.

Hendricken will open up the playoffs on Thursday.

Girls’ lacrosse postseason set to begin

The girls’ lacrosse regular season is coming to a rapid close, and Pilgrim has already clinched a spot in the playoffs, while Warwick Vets is getting close.

The Pats are 7-3 in Division III, and with a win on Wednesday in their season-finale against Scituate, they’ll lock up the No. 3 seed for the playoffs. A loss to the Spartans – who have only one win on the year – could drop Pilgrim to the No. 4 or 5 seed.

Vets, meanwhile, currently holds the eighth and final playoff spot in D-II at 3-6. With games left against 0-8 Lincoln and 8-2 Portsmouth, the ’Canes will likely finish 4-7, which would get them into the postseason.

The only scenario in which Vets misses the postseason is if it loses both games and East Providence defeated Mt. Hope on Monday.

The quarterfinals are slated for Thursday.

Titans walk-off

It’s been a long season for the Toll Gate baseball team so far, but the Titans got back in the win column for the first time in a long time with a 5-4 win over Barrington on Wednesday.

Trailing 4-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, Alex Lefebvre led off with a single and scored on a triple by Tyler Ekroth. Tim Warner knocked home the game-winning run with a single.

James Meizoso earned the win on the mound.

Toll Gate improved to 3-12 on the season.
