House of Hope fundraiser to transport guests to ‘Gilligan’s Island’

The House of Hope CDC is taking a “3-hour tour” to Gilligan’s Island for their Castaway For A Cause event on Friday, June 14.

The annual event, which is the organization’s major fundraiser for the year, will take place on the Warwick Country Club’s Sunset Deck from 6 to 10 p.m.

Due in part to the event’s location by the water, the theme of the evening is Gilligan’s Island, and guests are encouraged to dress in beach casual attire or join in on the fun and dress as their favorite S.S. Minnow passenger.

“It’s one of those shows; everybody knows Gilligan,” said Katheryn Tavares, manager of public relations and fund development for the House of Hope.

She added that many House of Hope board members and employees would be dressing up as the famous castaways.

According to a press release from House of Hope, when the seven passengers of the S.S. Minnow were stranded on the island, they were left without food, a home or hope. The same can be said for the 4,000-plus Rhode Islanders living in homelessness throughout the state. House of Hope provides not only a place for many of these individuals to stay, but guidance and support as they put their lives back together.

Tavares said any profits from the event, stemming from tickets sales, silent auction and corporate sponsors, will support the general operations of the organization. The organization hopes to raise $25,000 from the event.

“It should be relaxing and a good time,” said Tavares of the event, which will also include hors d’oeuvres, a Tiki dining station, and wine, beer, scotch and bourbon tastings.

There will also be live music from the band, New York Minute, a contemporary rock band.

“We wanted something upbeat to get people dancing,” said Tavares.

In addition to larger items in the silent auction, guests will have the opportunity to win smaller gifts or gift cards through a Pick and Pop Raffle. Guests can purchase a balloon for $25, and inside of each balloon is a ticket matching a corresponding prize.

“It’s fun because you are guaranteed to win something,” said Tavares, who added that all prizes through the Pick and Pop Raffle are valued at $25 or higher. She explained that last year, the 50 balloons sold out within the first hour of the event.

Tickets for the event will be sold up to the day of, although Tavares said no one would be turned away at the door. Tickets cost $75 and can be purchased by calling 463-3321 ex.231, online at www.thehouseofhopecdc.org or in person at the House of Hope Boutique at 3190 Post Road.
