CCRI ROUNDUP
Knights win overtime thriller
AHNYYAH JACKSON

The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team hosted the Knights of Division I power Globe Institute from New York, N.Y. on Saturday. The Knights won a thrilling overtime game 74-72.  With the victory, the Knights of CCRI improved to 15-7 on the season.

CCRI trailed to begin the game as Globe used its superior size and athleticism to control the early portion of the contest. After some defensive adjustments and once CCRI settled down a bit, CCRI was able to eventually tie the game and then take a 33-27 lead into halftime. In the second half, the Knights of CCRI were once again trailing late on the game but used tenacious defense to get stops and pull within two points at 62-60.

CCRI had a couple chances to tie it but came up short. With less than 10 seconds left, though, CCRI shooting guard Malieke Young (Providence) pump-faked his defender and drove in to sink a driving layup to tie the score at 62 as time ran off the clock sending the two Knights’ teams into overtime.

CCRI continued that pressure into the overtime and led by as many as six points. Though Globe fought back many times, the balanced attack of CCRI ultimately was too much.

Knights’ captain Pat Marchand (Cranston) charted a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Captain Anthony Henry also had a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. Captain Anthony Jernigan (East Hartford, Conn.) contributed 15 points, six assists and five steals while Young had nine points. Kevin Marmolejos (Bronx, N.Y.) added eight, including two three-pointers.

“This win over a quality DI opponent is proof that the team is beginning to step up its game at the right time of the season,” CCRI head coach Rick Harris said. “We executed much better today on offense and played great team defense for most if the game. But, as always, we now have to move onto the next game and try to play our best game of the season.”

The next game for the Knights will be this today at home against Region foe Roxbury CC, at 7 p.m.

Lady Knights come back to beat Orange

The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Colts of Orange County Community College from Middletown, N.Y on Saturday. The Lady Knights defeated the Colts 66-62. With the victory, the Lady Knights improved to 11-5 on the season.

The Lady Knights had previously beaten the Colts by 40 points in November, but the Colts were a different team this time around. The Colts took it to the Lady Knights in the first half by pounding the ball inside and getting easy baskets. At the end of the half, the Lady Knights trailed 31-25.

In the second half, the Lady Knights began playing much better on the defensive end, which helped them gain their first lead of the second half with the score 35-34 with 16 minutes left in the game. The Lady Knights led by as many as 10 points in the second half but could not pull away from the Colts. Yet, they never relinquished the lead. However, with less than two minutes remaining the Colts had cut the lead to three points, but the Lady Knights were able to hold on.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was captain Ahnyyah Jackson (Hackensack, N.J.) with 23 points. Her point total moved Jackson moved-up to No. 12 on the CCRI All-time scoring list with 633 career points, passing Rachel Murray. She needs just 20 more points to move into 11th place.

Captain Allexia Barros (New Bedford, Mass.) also helped out, scoring 16 points. Those points moved Barros over the 800-point mark with 805 for her career, ranking her No. 7 on the CCRI all-time scoring list behind Jerilynn Johnson.

Rounding-out the scoring for CCRI was Jesse Ossian (Chandler, Ariz.) with 15 points, Jess Patalano (Exeter) with seven points and Amber Edwards (Boston, Mass.) with four points.

The next game for the Lady Knights will be Saturday when they travel to Garden City, N.Y. to play the Lions of Nassau Community College.  The CCRI game versus Roxbury, which was originally scheduled for Thursday at Roxbury, has been postponed until a later date to be determined.
