The West Bay League of Women Voters named John Hazen White Jr. the first ever male to receive the “Man of the Year” award. The West Bay Chapter held a dinner and roast for White on June 27 at the Providence Biltmore Hotel. There were numerous politicians that provided citations to White and Mayor Allan Fung gave White a key to the city of Cranston. The roasters had the audience laughing all night, making jokes about White’s hair, hugs, dog and family. Along with the award, White was given a bottle of Old River Whiskey, Willy Nelson’s whiskey brand, which included a signed guitar pick. White assured that the bottle would never be opened while in his possession. White also shared a dance with his wife with a standing ovation before the end of the night. A total of 150 people attended the event and the funds raised will go to voter registration and lobbying at the State House. White is pictured here with Helen Taylor, president of the West Bay League of Women Voters.
