New Beach Contour

Spared from ice and snow this winter, city Department of Public Works crews got an early jump on addressing the erosion and collapse of the boardwalk and overlook at the City Park beach. Wave action from Tropical Storm Irene severely undermined the beach embankment and the walk. DPW Acting Director David Picozzi said conditions have worsened since the Buttonwoods jetty at the mouth of Brush Neck Cove has deteriorated and in response, with Coastal Resources Management consultation and approval, the city is removing trees closest to the beach as well as the walk and its foundation. In its place, the city will create a gradual slope to the beach.
