New salon focuses on customer service to grow clientele

If you want to be treated like a star, look no further than Astra Salon.

Astra, which is Latin for star, opened in late 2014 and already has built a large clientele with over 200 regular customers.

Owner Jennifer Ferruccio, who has more than 15 years of experience in the field, said the salon has the ability and the desire to “double, if not triple,” their clientele base.

The salon is in a refurbished house, one that actually used to belong to her grandparents.

After a year of renovations costing nearly $200,000, Ferruccio had her own salon.

“You know I basically grew up in this house, and when we had the opportunity to purchase it we took it,” Ferruccio said.

To have her own business in a house that she shares so much history with felt “like a dream come true.”

Ferruccio began her career in health administration but felt unfulfilled and “hated going into work every morning.”

When she was younger, Ferruccio had always been interested in hair, cutting bangs and doing up dos for her friends in college, but never thought to make a career out of it. Then, she spent one day at a cosmetology school. She quit her job and “threw” herself into schooling at the Warwick Beauty Academy. She said she has never stopped educating herself because in the field of cosmetology there is always something new to learn or share. She attended classes in Boston, New York and even as far as London.

“You don’t want to get stale; even for your own inspiration it’s helpful,” she said.

Now she has been a stylist for over 15 years and has finally opened her own salon.

Ferruccio brought on long-time co-worker and nail technician Kristen Fossati and Grace Shaw, an esthetician and nail technician, to work for her in her new salon. She said she and her staff feel less like co-workers and more like family and hope to extend that feeling to their customers as well.

“I want people to feel comfortable and welcomed coming here, like they are walking into a friend’s house, not a business,” Ferruccio said.

One way Ferruccio is trying to achieve that is by keeping customer service a top priority.

Ferruccio said in her experience customer service in general is on the decline and in many businesses today it is “lacking.”

“We have all had experiences when we think, ‘Oh, well, that could have gone better.’ We don’t want that here,” Ferruccio said. “We go out of our way to make sure everyone has the best experience possible.”

She said the salon industry has really “evolved” and people want more than just maintenance today.

Ferruccio finds that customers want more; they want a relationship with their stylist and to have a good time on top of just cutting their hair.

“It’s not just about cutting hair, Ferruccio said, “it’s about contributing to somebody’s overall appearance, their confidence. When you give people a change they love, they feel better overall. ”

Also unique to Astra Salon is that they use and sell Davines beauty products.

Davines is a family-owned company out of Italy that produces eco-friendly and sustainable products.

Ferruccio said, “Not only are you going to have a quality experience while you’re here, but you’ll have beautiful results at home too.”

“I feel it is important to be good to people, and when you are you get the best out of them,” she said.

Astra Salon has a wide array of services from simple haircuts to blowouts and weaves. They also offer many treatments for skin and nails. They are currently looking to hire two hairstylists.
