Warwick schools gearing up for league openers

Posted

All three Warwick schools will open up league action on the gridiron this Friday night, with Hendricken traveling to East Providence, Toll Gate hosting North Providence and Pilgrim taking on Mount Pleasant at Conley Stadium. - Toll Gate will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing non-league loss last Friday, 28-0, against Providence Country Day/Juanita Sanchez/Wheeler.

Luckily for the Titans, though, they get a favorable matchup this week, as they’re set to open D-III action against former D-IV team North Providence at Warwick Vets at 7 p.m.

Although Toll Gate is coming off a bad loss, so are the Cougars, as they got trounced by Pilgrim, 35-7, last Friday.

On paper, this looks like a great matchup for Toll Gate to start its D-III slate. If it shows up and puts together a good effort, I can see the Titans coming away with a relatively easy win.

But Toll Gate needs to get better, more consistent play on both sides of the ball.

In last week’s loss, the Titans couldn’t convert any of their offensive drives into points, and the defense yielded two lengthy touchdown runs.

Look for Toll Gate to turn it around this week, though, and get off to a good start in league play. It’ll need a big game from the quarterback-running back tandem of Anthony Vann and Michael Negri, and I think those two guys will step up and be game-changers.

Prediction: Toll Gate 28, North Providence 12 - Pilgrim is coming off of a commanding, 35-7 win over North Providence last week, as senior running back Nate Ferri compiled four touchdowns for the Pats and Sean Cooney added another.

The Pats’ offense is clicking on all cylinders at the right time heading into the first D-II game at Conley Stadium at 6 p.m. on Friday night against Mount Pleasant.

Pilgrim will be in for a much tougher test this week.

The Kilties went just 2-5 last season, but they’re coming off a 20-14 victory over fellow D-II foe Coventry last week, and they’ll be in front of a home crowd on Friday.

If Pilgrim can continue its stellar offensive play and show some resistance on defense, this week’s tilt with Mount Pleasant can be very competitive.

The Pats will need first-year starting quarterback James McKay to utilize targets such as Ty Weldon-Martin and James Baldwin, while relying on Ferri to be a workhorse out of the backfield.

I think the Pats will play well, but I’ll give the edge to Mount Pleasant at home.

Prediction: Mount Pleasant 20, Pilgrim 14 - After defeating an outstanding Notre Dame team at home last week, the Bishop Hendricken football team will travel to Pierce Memorial Field to take on the Townies of East Providence at 7 p.m. on Friday.

The Hawks are in great shape heading into their first league game, getting contributions from a bevy of players in the win against the Green Knights to boost the team’s confidence.

East Providence had a good 2015 season last fall, going 5-3 and earning the No. 3 seed for the playoffs.

And the Townies should be solid again this season after losing a couple of key contributors, but Hendricken is on a different level than everyone else in the state this season.

All of Hendricken’s most significant playmakers had big games against Notre Dame, too, with quarterback Chris Hindle totaling 179 yards through the air with three scores; running back Matt DiTondo carrying the ball 25 times for 106 yards and a touchdown; and receiver Andrew Hopgood posting six catches for 95 yards and three touchdowns.

Add to that the defensive efforts of Kwity Paye, Hopgood, Sam Hill and Anthony Witherstone on the defensive side of the ball, and the Hawks are going to be awfully tough to beat.

Prediction: Hendricken 42, East Providence 7
