The Warwick PAL junior varsity football team kept its perfect season going on Friday, downing the Revere Junior Patriots, 27-0, to capture the New England crown at Commerce Bank Field at Foley Stadium in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Running back Darius Frey dominated on the ground, compiling two touchdowns on over 150 yards rushing to pace PAL offensively.
On the defensive side of the ball, it was business as usual for Warwick. It shut down Revere’s offensive efforts completely.
“I’ll just recognize my defense as a whole because they were really good,” PAL head coach Brian Widmer said. “They gave up no points throughout the regional and have only allowed 13 points through 11 games this season.”
The balance of offense and defense was more than enough to help PAL secure the regional title and earn a spot at Pop Warner Nationals, which is set to begin on Saturday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee, Florida.
The only problem is that PAL is now left to raise money on its own – around $35,000.
To raise the needed funds, players have been going door to door asking for donations. Widmer noted that some local businesses have made generous donations to help the team’s cause, but PAL has also created a gofundme page to assist in raising money.
Anyone who would like to contribute to PAL’s cause can visit https://www.gofundme.com/warwick-pal-patriots-to-nationals.
“Every little bit helps,” Widmer said. “These kids have been working their tails off. They’ll get down there and represent Warwick well.”
