Pats spoil Titans’ bid for new unbeaten streak

The Toll Gate girls’ indoor track team was hoping to begin a new unbeaten dual meet streak this year after dropping a dual meet for the first time in 15 years last season.

A city rival wasn’t going to let that happen.

Pilgrim, with one of its best teams in years, knocked off Toll Gate on Tuesday by a single point – 55-54 – to hand the Titans their first loss of the year. The Pats also beat East Providence 84-19, while Toll Gate beat the Townies 90-18. Pilgrim improved to 4-2 in Division I-Bayha as Toll Gate fell to 5-1. North Kingstown is alone atop the standings with an unbeaten mark.

The Pats earned eight first-place finishes, compared to just four for the Titans. Pilgrim’s standouts did their jobs, while the rest of the team picked up points that proved extremely valuable on the back end.

Setting the pace was Melanie Brunelle, who won the high jump and the 55 hurdles, and took second in the long jump. Danika Wayss also won two events, taking the 1,000 and the 1,500. Other winners for Pilgrim were Rebecca O’Donnell in the long jump and Maddison Caron in the shot put. The Pats picked up valuable points in the relays too, winning the 4x200 and the 4x400.

Toll Gate’s winners on the day were Heather Allstrom in the 300, Morgan Dugan in the 600, Jess Cawley in the 3,000 and Courtney Jacobsen in the weight throw.

Other strong showings for the Titans included a second-place finish for Allstrom in the 55, second for Debbie Jessop in the 600, a second for Cawley in the 1,000, a second for Katherine Lavallee in the 1,500, a second for Ani Armenakyan in the shot put and two second-place finishes by Erika Pena – in the 55 hurdles and the high jump.

Lian Smithers was third in the 1,000, Sarah Lavallee was fourth in the same event and fourth in the 1,500, Sarah Marino was third in the 3,000, Adeline Lancellotta was fourth in the 3,000, Skylar Loeb was fourth in the 55 hurdles, Karla Wostenholme was fourth in the high jump, Victoria Bucci was third in the shot put and fourth in the weight throw while Victoria Smith was fourth in the shot put. Armenakyan was third in the weight throw. Pena was also third in the long jump, and Toll Gate’s relay teams took second in the 4x200 and third in the 4x400.

For Pilgrim, Mary Kate Agnew was second in the 3,000, Madison Stanley was second in the 300 and Caron was second in the weight throw. O’Donnell took third in the 55, Nicole Morales took third in the 600 and fourth in the 55, Claudia DeMelo was third in the 55 hurdles, Stanley was third in the high jump, Molly Lynch was fourth in the 300 and Kayda Phillip was fourth in the long jump.

The final dual meet for both teams this season will be Jan. 22.

Vets clinches best season since 1999-00

It had been well over a decade since the Warwick Vets girls’ indoor track team has won more than five dual meets in a season, until Tuesday.

The ’Canes won all four of their match-ups, defeating Wheeler, Rogers, Providence Country Day and Juanita Sanchez. Those four wins, coupled with a 3-1 start to the year, give Vets a 7-1 record and put its squarely in the Division II-Dwyer race. Only Mount St. Charles and Prout are ahead of the ’Canes, and Vets will face-off with those two opponents in its final dual meet of the season on Jan. 22.

Vets had three first-place finishes on Tuesday, with Kylie Lyon winning the 3,000, Kim Buchanan winning the weight throw and the 4x400 team winning that event. Lyon’s win added to her already strong meet, as she took second in the 600 as well.

The ’Canes also got a second place from Kayla Bourbon in the weight throw, Carlie McPherson in the 3000, Brittney Boyd in the 1,000 and Kaitlyn Johnson in the 1,500.
