Lloyd Kaplan will present a three-part series on pioneers of American music at Warwick Public Library on Sundays, November 1, 8 & 15 at 2 p.m.
On November 1, discover Stephen Foster, America’s first professional songwriter. If you’ve sung “Camptown Races,” “Oh! Susanna” or “Beautiful Dreamer,” you already know Foster. Now, get the rest of the story.
On November 8, learn about Jimmie Rodgers, the father of country music. Nicknamed “The Singing Brakeman and “The Blue Yodeler,” Rodgers set the template that country music follows to this day.
On November 15, explore Jelly Roll Morton, the first to orchestrate American jazz. A pivotal figure in the creation of modern jazz, his song “Jelly Roll Blues” was the first jazz composition to be published.
Lloyd Kaplan is Professor Emeritus of Music at the Community College of Rhode Island and an instructor in the University of Rhode Island’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.
