A man who was shot after allegedly pulling a gun on a pair of Cranston police officers early Saturday morning has been ordered held without bail on a fugitive charge out of Virginia.
Shawn Sykes, 26, appeared in district court with his left arm bandaged on Monday. He faces multiple charges in connection with the weekend incident – including assault with a deadly weapon, unlicensed possession of a firearm and cocaine possession – and was ordered held on $75,000 bail with surety on those counts.
Cranston Police Maj. Robert Ryan said the incident occurred at approximately 2:27 a.m. Saturday, when the two Cranston officers were working a special impaired driving detail and attempted to initiate a stop on Plainfield Street.
The vehicle refused to stop and continued a short distance across the Providence line before finally coming to a halt, according to the major, at which point the operator – identified as Sykes – is alleged to have exited the vehicle and pointed a .22-caliber pistol at the officers. Officer Bretton Robbins was identified in court as having fired at Sykes.
Sykes was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and later released to the custody of Providence police, Ryan said.
The incident remains under investigation by Cranston and Providence police, the Rhode Island State Police and the attorney general’s office.
