STOLEN VEHICLE

Officer Kevin McGuire Jr. was dispatched to the Nordstrom Rack store at 400 Bald Hill Road at approximately 6:34 p.m. on March 3 for a report of a stolen vehicle. McGuire met with a man who said he had parked his vehicle, a gold 2008 Acura TL 4-door, in the lot at Nordstrom Rack at approximately 1:20 p.m. and found that it was gone when he returned at 6:30 that night. McGuire said he spoke with a Nordstrom Rack loss prevention associate, who checked video surveillance and was able to see the rear end of the vehicle in the parking lot, which is seen leaving its parking spot at 5:05 p.m. The man said no one else has a key or access to his vehicle and that he always locks it and believes he did that day. McGuire said several minutes prior to the vehicle leaving, a suspicious male is observed on surveillance video walking by the entrance to Nordstrom Rack, looking into the lot. The man is wearing a hooded sweatshirt, with its hood up. He is not observed getting into the vehicle but is observed walking in the direction of the vehicle and looking at it. Several seconds later, the vehicle leaves the lot. McGuire said the vehicle was entered into NCIC as stolen and the owner was advised to contact his insurance company. The DVD of video surveillance was entered into evidence.

SPARE CHANGE

Officer John Zaborski was dispatched to a residence on Sheffield Street at approximately 9:27 p.m. on March 4 for the report of a larceny from a vehicle. Zaborski spoke with a man who said his vehicle had been broken into. He said a few minutes before Zaborski’s arrival, he heard a loud noise in his front yard and witnessed a suspect sitting near his vehicle. He said he made eye contact with the suspect, who took off and got into a vehicle described as an older model black Honda Civic or Accord with black rims. Officers checked the area but were unable to find a vehicle matching that description. The man said spare change was taken from his vehicle, and as the suspect was leaving, he broke off the driver side mirror. He said if the suspect were located, he would like to press charges.

MISSING EZ PASS

Officer Mitchell Voyer responded to Prior Street at approximately 5:33 p.m. on March 5 for the report of a larceny from a motor vehicle. Voyer met with a woman who said sometime overnight, someone had rummaged through her vehicle. She said the only item that appeared to be missing was an EZ pass that she had inside of the vehicle. However, the glove compartment and center console had been opened and rummaged through. The case was forwarded to Detectives.

SHOPLIFTING

Officers James Wenneman and Christian Vargas were dispatched to the Wal-Mart at 840 Post Road at approximately 6:23 p.m. on March 5 for the report of two shoplifters in custody. Dispatch stated that loss prevention had detained a mother and son. Loss prevention told police they observed a man select a white Samsung cell phone case valued at $49 and put it in the carriage that a woman, later identified as his step-mother, was pushing before eventually putting it in her purse, along with other items from the men’s clothing department. Items were also placed in the shopping cart, including a crock-pot and Nyquil. The pair then exited the store, passing all points of purchase without any attempt to pay for the merchandise. Once outside, they were approached by loss prevention and escorted back inside the store to the security office, where only the items in the shopping cart were initially recovered. Once in the security office, the suspects appeared to have removed the items from the woman’s purse and place them on a chair in the office. Once police arrived, all merchandise was recovered with a total of $181.31.

When confronted, the woman claimed she had never shoplifted before, apologized and said she would pay for the items, but routine checks showed previous shoplifting arrest for the woman. Due to her previous convictions and the amount of merchandise shoplifted, including 15 items totaling $131.34, Maria L. Martins, 65, of 34 Broom Street, Providence, was charged with shoplifting felony. Loss prevention said the man was uncooperative and declined to give his name.

Wenneman said Wal-Mart asked to have the individuals no trespassed from the store. Martins and Nuno Lima, 18, of 34 Broom Street, Providence, were arrested and transported to Warwick Police Department headquarters, where Lima was fingerprinted, photographed, booked accordingly by the jailer, and issued a Third District Court summons for Shoplifting. Vargas said Martins’ family was advised that she required bail money but at the time of the report it was unknown if she had been able to post bail. Both subjects were notified they were not allowed back at Wal-Mart.
