SHOPLIFTING

Officer Scott Chanthaphouvang was dispatched to the Kohl’s Department Store at 650 Bald Hill Road at approximately 12:11 p.m. on May 2 in reference to a shoplifter in custody. Upon arrival, Chanthaphouvang met with a loss prevention associate, who said he observed a female in the Beauty Department select six packs of makeup and one bottle of perfume from the display and place the items into the carriage and made her way into the fitting rooms. While in the fitting rooms, the associate said the woman concealed the items in her purse and then made her way past all points of purchase, failing to pay for the concealed merchandise and exited the store. The associate said he approached the woman, identified himself as loss prevention and asked her to come back to the loss prevention office, which she did. The associate told Chanthaphouvang the incident was captured on CCTV and Kohl’s wishes to prosecute the shoplifting. Chanthaphouvang said a total of seven items totaling $146.50 was recovered from the woman. Chanthaphouvang said she was cooperative and admitted to the shoplifting. MacKenzie L. Burdick, 36, of 225 Gibson Hill Road, Coventry was transported to Warwick Police Department headquarters, where she was processed and released with a District Court summons to answer for the charge of Misdemeanor Shoplifting in Third District Court. Chanthaphouvang said loss prevention provided a copy of the receipt and a photography copy of the stolen recovered merchandise for prosecution.

DUI

Officer Javier Cabreja was on routine patrol in the area of 99 Veterans Memorial Drive at approximately 12:29 a.m. on May 1 when he was approaching the split to turn right on to Greenwich Avenue and he observed a Jeep operating in the right-hand lane heading toward Greenwich Ave. He said he observed the vehicle come to an abrupt stop and twice leave its lane of travel, crossing over the double yellow lines into oncoming traffic, before jerking the wheel all the way to the right in an attempt to get to the far right lane, at which time he stopped the vehicle at the intersection of Greenwich Avenue and Blue Hill Drive. Cabreja made contact with the driver and asked for her driver’s license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance. As she provided her license, Cabreja said he detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from her breath. When asked where she was coming from, the woman said she is from Mansfield and was coming from Massachusetts and was attempting to meet her boyfriend at Murphy’s Law Bar in Pawtucket. Cabreja said he advised her she was in Warwick and that she may have missed her exit and the woman said she was lost. When asked how many alcoholic beverages she had consumed, the woman said none then immediately said she had two alcoholic beverages. In addition to the odor of alcohol emanating from her breath, Cabreja said the woman’s eyes were bloodshot and watery. During a series of standardized field sobriety tests, which the woman agreed to submit to, she was observed swaying from side to side and unable to maintain her balance. Cabreja said the woman failed all three standardized tests and due to his observations of the vehicle in motion and her performance on the tests, he deemed her unfit to operate a motor vehicle safely and placed Lisa M. Deshaies, 42, of 277 Franklin Street, Mansfield, MA in handcuffs and transported her to Warwick Police headquarters. Upon arrival, Deshaies was given an opportunity to make a phone call, which she did, but was unable to reach anyone. Cabreja said she agreed to submit to a chemical test, with a first reading of 0.220 and a second reading of 0.234, and was then fingerprinted, photographed, processed and secured in a cell. Deshaies was charged with DUI of liquor or drugs first offense .15 or greater and given a Third District Court summons. She was also issued violations for laned roadway violation and for signaling of stops. Cabreja said since Deshaies is from Massachusetts, she was held for the next court session.
