WHY THEY GET CAUGHT

Officer Aaron Steere reported he was on patrol behind a 2000 Lexus on Bald Hill Road around 5 p.m. on Jan. 10 when he noticed that the Lexus had unusually dark side and back windows. He said he did a traffic stop and discovered that the driver had a suspended license and his BCI revealed an arrest for failure to appear on a prior suspended license charge and had been arrested by the State Police earlier in 2010. Edwin N. Peralta, 39, of 188 Vermont St. in Providence was arrested and held for the Bail Commissioner after being charged with driving on a suspended license and installing unlawful sunscreen material on his car. He was later released on $2,000 surety bail. Officer Lucas Pedro reported stopping a car with an expired registration tag on Post Road around 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 9 and discovering the driver’s license was suspended, in spite of the driver telling him he simply didn’t have it with him. Pedro said there was no current inspection sticker on the vehicle and it wasn’t insured. Peter Rinn, 28, of 6 Kent St. in West Warwick was charged with driving on a suspended license and driving an uninsured, unregistered and un-inspected vehicle.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Nathan G. Pope, 48, of Indianapolis, Ind., pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Providence Monday to conspiracy and transporting an individual across state lines to engage in prostitution, in violation of the Mann Act. Pope and a co-defendant, Jan M. Wales, 45, of Indianapolis, were charged with trafficking two women they recruited on the Internet to a Warwick hotel to engage in prostitution. Wales pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Providence in August. Pope drove the women from Indiana to a hotel in Warwick, and checked in with the intent to solicit customers in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Pope left one of the women at the hotel after assaulting her, prompting her to contact Warwick Police, which brought federal agents into the incident. That night, Pope was found in a hotel in Windsor Locks, Conn., and arrested on a federal arrest warrant. Wales remained in Indianapolis and scheduled appointments in Rhode Island via text messages. She was arrested in Arizona in February. Sentencing for Pope is scheduled for April 29.

SHOPLIFTING

A Connecticut woman was arrested and charged with shoplifting at Sears in the Rhode Island Mall on Jan. 9 after security at the store told Officer Aaron Steere she was acting suspiciously before she took a 7-inch digital photo frame, removed the security device and concealed the frame and walked out of the store without paying for the frame. The Sears people told Steere the woman was cooperative and returned to the store with them without incident and explained that she needed the frame to raise money for her rent but they were still going to press charges. They also told the woman she was not to return to the store or risk being arrested for trespass. Nicole Pepe, 22, of 77B Reynolds St. in Danielson was charged with shoplifting and held for the next session of District Court.

PAINTBALL VANDALS

Officer John Allen reported a paintball attack at the Rainbow Shoppe at 1245 Bald Hill Road on Jan. 3. He said the manager of the store told him she had already cleaned up what she said was at least 20 paintball hits on the front window of the shop but she was still upset about the paintballs because it had “taken quite a bit of effort” to clean up the front of the store. She told Allen that the camera on the near corner of the Target store might have captured the incident on video. She said she found the mess around 9:30 that morning when she came to work. Allen said he went next door to Target to see what video they had of the attack but a loss prevention employee at Target told him they had already heard about the incident and checked the video and found the camera had not captured images of the vandals or the act itself. There were no suspects or witnesses.

STOLEN PLOW

A Commonwealth Avenue resident told Officer Mark Jandreau he went to look for his snowplow on Jan. 4 and discovered that it was missing. He said he last saw the plow on Dec. 21. He described it as a 7-foot Pathfinder electric hydraulic plow painted yellow with a red Western pump motor attached. He said it was worth around $3,500. No suspects or witnesses.

MISSING ATV

A Maplewood Avenue resident told Officer Paul White that his 1987 Honda TRX ATV has been missing since Dec. 23. He said he waited until Jan. 7 to report it because he has been trying to locate it since then and had given up and called police to report it stolen. He said the ATV was red with white fenders and was worth around $1,000. White forwarded the report to the Auto Squad.

STOLEN BOAT STANDS

Officer John McHale reported the theft of boat stands from Angels Marina on Bay Avenue on Jan. 4. The owner of the marina told McHale that, since the beginning of October to that date, about 50 boat stands have been stolen from beneath boats at the marina. He said that three to four stands have gone missing every night and that whoever is taking them knows that not taking all the stands at once will leave the boats supported, so the thieves have been taking the stands one by one without leaving the boats on the ground. The owner said, apart from the $95 to $100 that each stand costs, he’s worried that someone could be injured if they attempted to board their boat without knowing that at least one stand is missing, which could bring a large boat crashing down on someone. He told McHale he doesn’t know what the thieves are doing with the stands and speculated that they may be selling them over the Internet. McHale said there are no suspects or witnesses at this time.
