The Police Log is a digest of reports filed by the Warwick Police.

VANDALS

Police took a report of vandalism on Shawomet Avenue on April 20. A resident said he came out to his driveway that morning and found that two tires on two separate cars were slashed. He told police the tires were worth $250 and $125, respectively. He said he had no idea who or why someone would do that. No suspects or witnesses.

A local businessman came into headquarters on April 22 to report that an advertising sign he owned at the Airport Connector by Jefferson Boulevard had been vandalized. The man said he noticed the damage a week before and had already got an estimate for repairs. He said it would cost $1,402.90 to have it repaired. He said the sign itself cost $4,000. No suspects or witnesses.

A homeowner on Emily Lane told police he heard noises in the night on April 16 and noticed the next day that there was about a half dozen rocks on the ground beside his house and damage to the vinyl siding. He had no idea who did it or why. No witnesses.

Police took a report from an employee of the Empire Beauty School on Bald Hill Road who told them she came to work around 9 a.m. and noticed that the doors on both sides and the back of her vehicle had been “keyed” sometime during the day. No suspects or witnesses.

LARCENIES

A Warwick man told police someone damaged his car and stole a $125 GPS unit and about $15 in cash from his car some ime between 10 p.m. on April 13 and 12:30 a.m. the next day. He told police he had been at Picasso’s Pizza during that time and then drove home to Sargent Street. He said he didn’t notice the damage until 8 a.m. the next day, when he discovered that someone had carved letters on the trunk and hood of the car and the convertible top had been sliced on the driver’s side. No suspects or witnesses.

Police went to the United Health Group office on Kilvert Street on April 19 for a report of a missing wallet. She said she last saw the wallet around 7:45 a.m. the day before and noticed it was missing around 5 p.m. the same day. She said she had searched for the wallet everywhere and finally gave up looking around 9 a.m. that morning. She said she believed her “Giani Bernini wristlet wallet (8”x4” in green leather with tan trim) was stolen.” She said it contained a number of debit cards, department store cards, credit cards, gift cards, family pictures and her driver’s license. No suspects or witnesses. She told police she would press charges against whoever stole the wallet or used the credit cards and information fraudulently.

A 20-year-old Johnston man told police the suitcase that belonged to him was stolen from his vehicle at the Comfort Inn on Post Road sometime between 10 p.m. on April 20 and 2 a.m. the next morning. He said the red rollaway suitcase contained his birth certificate, his Social Security card, a TD Bank checkbook, $100 in cash, 20 oxycodone pills and 30 carisprodol pills, both of which are controlled substances. Police said the man believed he locked his car but there was no sign of forced entry or shattered glass.

Police took a larceny report from a customer at McKinley’s Bar on Division Street on April 23. A customer told police he left his wallet on the bar and went to the men’s room and returned to find the wallet on the floor and about $300 missing from it. He said nothing but the cash was missing and no one in the bar noticed anything amiss.

A North Kingstown woman told police she was at JoAnn Fabrics on April 23 and left her wallet in her shopping carriage when she left. She said she was on her way home on Route 2 when she realized she didn’t have the wallet and returned to the store, but the wallet was gone. She said it was mere minutes before she came back. She said it contained credit cards, bank cards, a checkbook and her driver’s license. She told police she already cancelled most of the cards and no activity had been reported. No suspects or witnesses.

SHOPLIFTING

A Warwick man was charged with shoplifting at the Walmart store on Bald Hill Road on April 22 after loss prevention told police they watched the man select a number of pieces of clothing and conceal them in a baby carriage before wheeling the carriage out of the garden section of the store without paying for the concealed items. Loss prevention said they recovered $114.88 worth of merchandise from the carriage. Kyle J. Curran, 22, of 579 Providence St., was charged with shoplifting and later released with a summons. His girlfriend who was with him at the store was not charged and was allowed to take her child home.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer Russell Brown reported stopping a car for tailgating, lane changing without signals and speeding on Airport Road around 1:15 a.m. on April 16. He said he clocked the suspect at 55 miles per hour before he was pulled over. He said the driver pointed in three different directions when he was asked where he was coming from and appeared to be intoxicated. He said the driver was given a field sobriety test and failed it. Brown said John Martineau, 47, of 301 Greenville Ave., Johnston, was taken to headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test. He was charged with laned roadway violations, tailgating, speeding, DUI and refusal. He was later released to a sober adult.

SUSPECT SOUGHT

Warwick Police continue to investigate an armed robbery that occurred at the Valero gas station at 1625 Post Rd. around 2:30 p.m. on April 16. Police say they have surveillance of the suspect, described as an unshaven white male, 5’8” to 6’ in his 40s wearing a gray zippered sweatshirt, jeans, black sunglasses and sneakers. The suspect may have had a soft cast or medical-type wrapping on his left wrist or arm and that a black handgun was displayed at the robbery.

Police are also seeking a vehicle that may have been involved, a white or silver 2001 to 2004 Nissan Frontier crew-cab pickup truck with a black bed cover and running boards with only one chrome wheel cover on the driver’s side rear.

Cranston Police are also investigating two robberies that they believe are related to this one.
