Rams beat Hawks in opener

Posted

The Division I lacrosse season always takes a long time to get up and running in the spring, and Bishop Hendricken finally took the field for the first time this past Wednesday.

It wasn’t an ideal start.

The Hawks lost 16-7 to two-time defending state champion La Salle, giving them an 0-1 mark to start things off. Rams’ standout Matt Manown led the way with four goals and five assists.

For Hendricken, Andrew Fera had two goals and an assist, while Conor Garrahy had two goals as well. Tyler Williams had a goal and two assists, Jonathan Finelli had a goal and an assist, Kyle Ellis had a goal and Joe Sousa and Reilly Miller had an assist each. Sam Milnes made 10 saves in goal.

The Hawks will have a chance to break into the win column today when they’re at Portsmouth at 2 p.m. On Friday they’ll have another tough game, hosting Moses Brown at 6 p.m.

Titans break out

The Toll Gate volleyball team went winless last year, but the Titans don’t have to worry about that happening again thanks to its best stretch in two years.

Toll Gate defeated Classical 3-2 on April 9, and beat Mt. Hope 3-0 this past Tuesday. Sprinkled in the run were losses to Shea and St. Raphael, but the two wins still made for a successful two weeks.

Toll Gate is now 2-4 overall, tied for second place in Division II-West with Warwick Vets. Central leads the sub-division at 4-2.

The Titans lost the first game to Classical before rallying to win the next two. After losing the fourth, Toll Gate pulled it together to win the deciding fifth game 15-13.

Against Mt. Hope, Toll Gate was more dominant. It won the first game 25-7, then won the next two 25-21 and 25-14.

With those two wins under their belt, the Titans will look to keep building, as they have two games this week. They host Tolman on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and then are at Cranston West Friday, also at 6:30.
