Off-Broadway’s Rock Opera “Murder Ballad” has found its way to Rhode Island, courtesy of Wilbury Theatre.

The familiar love story has Sara (Jess Andra), a downtown girl having a torrid affair with Tom (Rudy Sanda), a bar owner. Sara splits and is picked up by kind and gentle Michael (Wyndham Maxwell), moving uptown and having his baby. Sara is torn between her fast-lane past life and her newfound comfortable life, eventually hooking up again with Tom. After living two lives, Sara’s love triangle finally comes to the point of no return, and the musical lives up to its name.

It is time for the murder in “Murder Ballad” to happen. The only thing left is to find out who the murderer is and who gets murdered.

The hour and a half, intermission-less musical is all sung, like a tragic opera, with Moira Costigan-Carraher filling in the blanks as the sexy narrator.

There are a few interesting songs and lyrics by Juliana Nash, with one outstanding voice in the foursome. “I Know Where Promises Go” was my favorite.

Jess Andra shines with her smooth, pleasant voice, contrasting with the narrator’s loud and occasionally unintelligible singing, which is often overpowered by the three-piece band.

Unfortunately, the prologue and epilogue lyrics were hard to understand because of the loud background music and acoustics in the hall. An “A” for effort by Wilbury Theatre, doing their best with a so-so new musical.
