Third suspect still being sought

Rhode Island State Police recovered an additional 600 boxes of diapers as part of their ongoing investigation into the theft of about $90,000 worth of diapers on Friday. A third suspect in the case is still being sought.

Major Dennis Fleming, Detective Commander for the Rhode Island State Police, said the 600 boxes of diapers – worth an estimated $24,000 – were recovered from a private home in Cranston earlier today. That is in addition to 900 boxes of diapers – worth an estimated $36,000 – that were seized from a storefront on Smith Street in Providence on Thursday.

Still missing are 800 boxes of diapers, worth about $32,000. Detectives are still searching for the missing diapers. They also are continuing their search for a third suspect in the case.

Two men were arrested and later arraigned in Third Division District Court, where they were released on personal recognizance, pending further court action. They were identified as Mitchell Bettis, also known as Aubrey Bettis, 59, of 198 River Ave., Providence, charged with larceny over $1,500 and conspiracy; and Damon Martin, 41, of 200 Goldfinch Drive, Coventry, charged with larceny over $1,500, receiving stolen goods, conspiracy, soliciting another to commit a crime and obstructing a police officer. A warrant has been issued for a third suspect.

Bettis had been hired by the owner of the delivery truck to drive the load of diapers from a location in Pennsylvania to the Amazon distribution facility last week, but he instead allegedly sold the diapers.

Detectives obtained a search warrant for an empty storefront at 451 Smith St. in Providence, where they recovered 800 boxes of diapers yesterday. They later learned that additional diapers were stored in a private home on Lawrence Street in Cranston, where detectives located an additional 600 boxes earlier today. No one was arrested at that location, the commander said.

Most of the stolen diapers were Pampers, in various sizes. Each box holds about 100 diapers and sells for about $40.

State Police are still searching for the third suspect, as well as the rest of the diapers.
