Taking reading challenge minute by minute

THEY TOOK THE CHALLENGE: Park School summer readers with their certificates of achievement.

BOOK WORM: Amber Courtney amassed 28,373 minutes reading during the challenge. She said she loves reading fiction and pretty much spent her summer with a book.

HARD TO BELIEVE: Aline Saab amassed 58,630 minutes, yet even with that number of minutes she wasn’t the school’s top reader. She said she spent a lot of her summer in the library. TV wasn’t an option.

WAY UP THERE: Waldyn Santana, with 58,936 minutes, was Park School’s top reader. Beside him is Jennifer Saab, who wasn’t far behind with 56,500 minutes.

Park School ranked first in Warwick, second in the state and in the top 100 of the 6,229 schools across the world that participated in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. Collectively, young readers recorded 286.6 million minutes of reading. The 75 Park students participating in the event tallied more than 424,000 minutes of reading from early May until Sept. 4. The children logged onto a website where they recorded their minutes. On Friday all 75 children – kindergarten through fifth grade – were presented certificates of achievement in front of their enthusiastic classmates who cheered and gave them high-fives as they rose to get their certificates.
