Mayor Scott Avedisian presented certificates of achievement to Holliman School sixth graders Rachel Kiernan and Tatyana Boiano for having placed second and first, respectively, as Warwick representatives in the state spelling bee in March. The spelling bee returned as an activity at Holliman thanks to the efforts of PTA member Adam Smith and kindergarten teacher Joan Wilkinson. Smith participated in the event as an elementary school student and his brother, Jeremy, went on to compete in the nationals. While at Cedar Hill School, Wilkinson had worked on the spelling bee and helped prepare students for the competition. Rachel, at left, said she stumbled on the word “fluctuation.” Tatyana correctly spelled “goliath” to take first place for the city. Avedisian made the presentations at an assembly May 26.
