The Toll Gate volleyball team seemed to be getting closer to its first Division II victory but still had nothing to show for it. That finally changed Friday as the Titans beat Narragansett 3-1 for their first win of the year and their first since moving down to Division II.
The Titans were coming off sweeps at the hands of Warwick Vets and Cranston West but righted the ship against the Mariners. They won the first game 25-17 then lost the second game 25-19. But unlike some previous matches, when the Titans continued sliding after losing momentum, they responded this time, winning game three 25-19 and surging to the victory with a 25-16 win in game four.
Taylor Payton had eight kills and six aces to lead the Titans, while Faith Porter tallied eight aces and seven digs.
Toll Gate is now 1-6 in Division II. With the halfway point of the season still a week away, the Titans will be looking to build on the victory and make a second-half run. They will host Westerly on Wednesday.
’Canes knocked from unbeaten ranks
After two impressive victories over top teams, the Warwick Vets field hockey squad couldn’t quite get the hat trick. On Wednesday, Cumberland handed Vets its first loss with a 1-0 victory. Karin Dion’s first-half goal was the difference. It was just the second goal Vets has given up all year. Naomi Franzen made nine saves for Vets, but Cumberland’s Michaela Simanski stopped 11 shots for the shutout.
Vets dropped to 6-1 with the loss but still sits in first place in Division II-South. The ’Canes were scheduled to play Burrillville on Monday, with results unavailable at press time.
Hawks hanging with the best
Fresh off a tie with third-place Central Falls, the Bishop Hendricken soccer team nearly knocked off unbeaten Central on Friday but settled for a 4-4 draw.
The Hawks led 4-2 on goals by Nick Williams, Luis Lawrence, Christian Kirby and Chukwuma Onyejose. Central scored three goals in the second half, all from Esril Giron.
The Hawks improved to 2-1-2 with the draw. They were set to play South Kingstown on Monday.
