Town’s Dems plan unique election season fundraisers

They won’t have caucuses in “Frog City” or the West End, but the Johnston Democratic Town Committee is gearing up for three fundraisers that could attract record crowds.

“It’s election time again!” Richard DelFino Jr., chairman of the committee, said. “Excitement is beginning to build within our group. We’re getting ready for the 2016 campaign in a number of different ways.”

First and foremost, the committee will host three fundraisers to benefit each of the Democrats candidates who will run for either Town Council, School Committee, or the General Assembly in November. Those events are the Family Unity Breakfast, the cookbook unveiling, and the October 5K Road Race.

The Family Unity Breakfast is a tradition for the Johnston committee, and will be held on Sunday, May 1, at the Dillon Council, Knights of Columbus Hall located at 1675 Douglas Ave. in North Providence.

“It has often been a reunion for lots of people,” DelFino said while announcing that Linda Folcarelli and Lois Mazzulla-Marandola volunteered to co-chair the event. “They’re already working hard selling tickets that will only be $10 per person.”

Breakfast will be served from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Those seeking to purchase tickets, or reserve a table that can seat up to eight, should call Folcarelli at 401-451-2757.

“We’ll have a 50/50 raffle,” Folcarelli said, “and we’ve got another interesting way for people to advertise their respective businesses that in year’s past have been a great boost for our committee.”

Folcarelli said the committee will have special placemats printed for the breakfast, which will feature a person’s business or personal message. Each space on the placemat will cost $25 for a space that measures 1.25 inches by 2.5 inches. All check should be made payable to the Johnston Democratic Town Committee.

People who’d like multiple spaces should call Folcarelli at the number listed above.

WANTED: RECIPES

Frank Saccoccio, a prominent Johnston attorney and member of the town committee, is heading the group’s second election season fundraiser – a cookbook that will feature recipes from notable Democrats, some of Rhode Island’s leading restaurateurs, and people from all over town.

Saccoccio said the cookbook that will contain 120 Italian recipes from people like DelFino Jr., Public Works Director Arnie Vecchione, and public works staffer Peter DelPonte, who operates the Dillon Council kitchen.

“The cookbook will create lots of chatter around town, and producing it is going to be lots of fun,” Saccoccio said. “We’re even looking into having a celebrity design the cookbook cover.”

Saccoccio said the cookbook will cost $20 and be available at the May 1 breakfast, as well as at local businesses throughout the election season.

The town committee is accepting write-in recipes, which may be sent to johnstondtc@gmail.com.

A UNIQUE RUN

The group’s third fundraiser will be a 5K (3.1-mile) Road Race, which DelFino said will be held in early October.

“We’re lining up a special road race committee,” he said. “We want this to be the biggest running event of the season. We want everything about this 5K to be special, from the committee to the course to the T-shirt sponsors and even the post-race awards ceremony.”

Anyone who’d like to help with the road race, which will be a first for the Johnston Democrats, should also contact Folcarelli, who serves as the group’s volunteer secretary, at 401-451-2757 or johnstondtc@gmail.com.
