Four students from Winman Junior High School and two students from Toll Gate High School received first prizes in their respective categories at the RI National History Day competition on April 9 at Providence College. The students will now compete at the National History Day Contest in College Park, MD June 12-16.
Winman first prize winners were: Owen Johns, an eighth grade student, in the Historical Paper category for his topic, Charles Darwin; Samuel Maynard, an eighth grade student, in the Individual Exhibit category for his topic, John James Audobon; and Kerrin Li and Elana Caparco, eighth grade students, in the Group Exhibit category for their topic, Mother Jones. The Winman Social Studies teachers who guided the students in the process were Julie Connors-Costello and Anibal Raposo.
Toll Gate High School first prize winners were: Rebecca Carcieri, a ninth-grade student in the Individual Website category for her topic, Margaret Mead; and Elise Saccoccia, a ninth-grade student, in the Historical Paper category for her topic, Lewis and Clark. The Toll Gate Social Studies teachers who guided the students in the process were Mrs. Jonni Goddard and Mr. Timothy Hayes.
The 2016 National History Day theme is “Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History.” The contests are held in the spring in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam and at international schools in Central America, China, Korea, and South Asia.
