A fitting memorial to Steve

More than 75 people gathered Dec. 2 at the Stephen J Medeiros Fishing Area at Black Point to celebrate the dedication of this beautiful piece of Rhode Island in honor of Steve Medeiros. Presentations were made by Congressman Seth Magaziner, RIDEM Assistant Director Jason McNamee, The Nature Conservancy RI Director John Torgan, Steve’s daughter Audra Medeiros, and RISAA 1st Vice President Rich Hittinger. Medeiros, West Warwick Police Sergeant, unexpectedly passed away on Monday, September 13, 2021 at the age of 72. Among his many achievements he was the Executive Director of the Rhode Island Saltwater Anglers Association. He worked with fellow fishermen to develop the fishing club into a nationally recognized body consisting of thousands of individual members and a broad alliance of other affiliated organizations and coalition partners. His legacy includes the creation of quality fishing opportunities for current and future generations including the Rocky Point Youth Fishing Camp, Take-A-Kid Fishing Days and the New England Saltwater Fishing Show. “Steve’s approach was always the same: straightforward, well informed, kind, and respectful, which made him effective, widely admired, and profoundly influential. One of his deepest passions was protecting and increasing public access to the shore, so it is fitting to be memorialized at one of the state’s premiere fishing access sites at Black Point, Narragansett,” RISAA 1st Vice President Rich Hittinger wrote in an email.
