Archie and Lulu Van Griffin, whose headstone was discovered in a closet at Brown University on Jan. 17, 2017 by Jack Wrenn, a PhD student at the time was recently moved by members of the Warwick Commission on Historical Cemeteries and placed on an existing headstone base directly in front of his daughter, Louisa May, during the cleanup of Brayton Cemetery. The headstone was featured in a story written by Dana Richie, a Brown summer intern reporter at the Warwick Beacon Her investigation led her to Franklin Almada who said he first came across the headstone in 1991 or 1992, around the same time he became the custodian in Sayles Hall. No explanation as to how the stone arrived at Brown was learned, however, Wrenn wanted to see it returned to its resting place. Through Pegee Malcolm, president of the Warwick and Rhode Island Commissions on Historical Cemeteries, he learned of Brayton Cemetery. The headstone was returned to the cemetery June 14, but not until recently was it placed on a base. These photos were taken by Susan W. Cabeceiras, a member of the Warwick Commission on Historical Cemeteries, during their fall cleanup of Brayton Cemetery where Commissioner Al Golder enjoyed playing with the Commission’s new leaf blower purchased, along with other supplies, with the Commission’s annual budget of $400.
