Bay habitats featured at Save the Bay center & aquarium

Posted

Save The Bay’s Exploration Center and Aquarium is putting Narragansett Bay’s many varied habitats at the forefront of this month's programming. Expert aquarium staff will guide guests through exhibits and displays exploring the subject, while self-guided activities – including crafts, a scavenger hunt and storytime – will help even the youngest visitors understand habitat diversity.

Narragansett Bay, an estuarine ecosystem found where rivers meet sea, supports an exceptional variety of interacting habitats, each hosting a different array of creatures and plant life. Guests to the aquarium this month will discover which creatures nestle in eelgrass beds, scuttle among salt marshes, hide in the crevices of rocky shores and swim through freshwater.

Visitors to the aquarium can also meet and learn about the aquarium’s newest guests and their habitats, from a rare blue lobster and an Atlantic sea raven, to locally discovered trunkfish from tropical climates and bull frog tadpoles.

To get an even closer look at the lives of Bay creatures, guests can purchase tickets to this month’s Feeding Frenzy at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15. This exciting after-hours event allows guests to participate in the aquarium creatures’ favorite time of day: feeding time. Those who want to see what all the splashing is about can buy $10 tickets ($8 for members) at savebay.org/feedingfrenzy.

The Exploration Center and Aquarium is located in the Easton’s Beach Rotunda at 175 Memorial Blvd. in Newport. The center is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday-Sunday, from Labor Day to Memorial Day, and will also be open Monday, Nov. 12 for the Veterans Day holiday.

The Exploration Center and Aquarium now offers free general admission to all active and veteran military and first responders with current ID, as well as a reduced admission of $7 for their guests.

General admission to the Aquarium is $8; $7 for seniors, college students with ID and guests of military and first responders; and free for children under 3, Save The Bay Family members, all active and veteran military and first responders with current ID.
