The Pilgrim Senior Center was humming – no, there weren’t any dogs or cats – as the Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter held its 15th annual breakfast and raffle Saturday.

Like so many non-profits, the Friends have a core group of about 20 who do the bulk of the heavy lifting. However, as Friends’ president Judy Salvadore notes, if it wasn’t for widespread community support, they wouldn’t be able to accomplish what they do. The support comes in different forms, such as raffle items that made up the 50 baskets people could take their chances on to discount food prices provided by Sandy Lane Meat Market. Most important is the extensive following of people who care about animals and want to support the animal shelter.

Funds raised by the Friends pay for the spaying and neutering of dogs and cats, tests for the animals and a veterinarian when needed.

The breakfast is one of several Friends’ fundraisers. A craft show will be held May 11 at the Pilgrim Senior Center and the big daddy of the fundraisers comes with the Friends’ Car Show – yes, you’ll find dogs there – June 9 at 171 Service Avenue not far from the shelter. Collectively, the events raise about $20,000.
