CCRI captures Region XXI championship
The CCRI golf team continued play in the 2017 Division III Region XXI Championship on Friday at Chicopee Country Club in Chicopee, Massachusetts – the home course of Springfield Technical Community College and Holyoke Community College. After the first day, CCRI led with a 330 and maintained a 31-stroke lead over Holyoke Community College, which had carded a 361. The Knights shot a 348, which was the second-lowest score of the day to win their fifth consecutive Region XXI title.
On the second day of the Region XXI Tournament, the Knights continued their dominant play. Leading the way for CCRI was freshman Tyler Boisclair (West Warwick, Rhode Island), who shot the low Knights score of the day with an impressive 82, just one stroke over his first-day total of 81 to give him a two-day total of 163. Boisclair was followed by tri-captain Matt O’Brien (Portsmouth, Rhode Island), who fired an 86 after shooting a first-day low score of 78 to give him a two-day total of 164. Boisclair finished second individually and O’Brien took third to earn them both All-Region XXI honors. Also playing well for the Knights was tri-captain Sam Caron (Cumberland, Rhode Island) who shot an 88 after a first-day 84 to give him a two-day total of 172. Rounding out the team score for the Knights’ final day of the regional was Aaron Bento (Seekonk, Massachusetts), who shot a final-round 92 and first-round 87 for a two-day total of 179. Also competing for CCRI was tri-captain Meghan Rocheleau (Warwick, Rhode Island), who shot a 94 after a first-round 102 for a two-day total of 196. The Knights’ team shot a 348 on Day 2 after a 330 on the first day for a total of 678 to win the title.
The second-place team in the Region XXI Tournament was Springfield Tech, which registered a team score of 345 after shooting a first-round 365 for a two-day total of 710. Springfield was followed by Bristol CC, which scored a 375 and 383 for a two-day total of 758 to finish third as a team. Holyoke CC only finished with three golfers, so it had no team score, while Massasoit and Mass Bay had two and one golfer, respectively.
The top six individuals earned All-Region XXI honors. That group was led by medalist (lowest score) Matt Murphy from Bristol CC with a 175. Murphy was followed by Boisclair of CCRI (163), O’Brien of CCRI (164), Nick Barber of MassBay at 166, Colby Manning of Holyoke CC with a 167 and Jack De Costa of Massasoit CC with a 170.
The next match for the Knights will be at the NJCAA Division III Golf National Championship hosted by Jamestown Community College at Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautauqua, New York from June 6-9.
