PEPPER SPRAYED SUSPECT

Warwick officers recently found a shirtless robbery suspect writhing and yelling on the ground in pain after residents fought with, pepper spayed, and detained him.

On September 18 at approximately 12:50 a.m., Officer Thomas Greene was dispatched to Posnegansett Avenue for a report of a larceny in progress from a motor vehicle with the suspect apprehended by an off duty officer.

In his report, Officer Green states that once he arrived on scene, he found three male suspects in the vicinity of the front lawn of the reported address. Two men were standing, while another lay on the ground, rolling around and screaming.

The individual on the ground was identified as Kevin Gilchrist, 24, of 130 Pilgrim Parkway, Apt. 8, of Warwick. One of the two witnesses stated that he had woken up due to a motion detector alarm, and looked outside to see a suspect in a dark hoodie with plaid pajama pants attempting to break into his car.

The resident got dressed and found the subject three houses away attempting to break into another car. The witness then confronted Gilchrist, and he became hostile and attempted to flee. The homeowner then administered pepper spray and ordered him to the ground until the police arrived.

The second witness stated he was told by a neighbor that his car was being broken into, and he went outside to find the first witness attempting to restrain Gilchrist.

Once the suspect had been restrained by the resident, he emptied his pockets to reveal a Smith and Wesson knife, a watch and his wallet. The first witness told officers that his daughter’s cell phone, a purse, debit card, and $7 were taken.

Gilchrist was detained by the officer and taken to police headquarters for decontamination. He was brought to the eye wash station in an attempt to clear the pepper spray from his face. At this point the suspect began yelling that he wanted to speak with his lawyer, and that his back and head hurt from the confrontation. He was eventually transported to Kent Hospital.

Once released by the hospital, he was transported back to headquarters, fingerprinted and processed. He was charged with two counts of larceny.

STOLEN SAW

Officer Manuel Pacheco was on routine patrol on West Shore Road near the intersection of Hoxsie Four Corners on September 17 around 9 p.m., when a driver in front of him exited his vehicle and approached him. The driver told the officer that someone had just stolen a saw out of his trailer at his home on Waterman Avenue.

According to the report, the victim stated that he saw the suspect leave in a blue colored Nissan pickup truck with a red colored dirt bike in the bed of the vehicle.

Officer Pacheco then visited the residence and again spoke with the victim, who notified him that his daughter had noticed the trailer door was open. She told her father that a male parked in the street near the trailer, with a woman passenger who had dark hair and a ponytail who waited in the truck.

Upon checking the trailer, the homeowner noticed that his yellow DeWalt 12 inch compound saw, valued at approximately $500, was missing. He stated that the trailer was not locked at the time, and the saw was hardly used and in like new condition. As of the time of this report there were no suspects or witnesses.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

On September 11 just after 4 a.m., Officer Aaron Kay was on patrol traveling south on Warwick Avenue in the area of Miantonomo Drive when he observed a vehicle swerving in front of him. The vehicle continued to travel southbound, drifting left and right into the other lanes of travel as well as the breakdown lane.

In his report, Officer Kay states that the vehicle continued to swerve, nearly striking a curb near the intersection of Airport Road. He then clocked the vehicle at a constant speed of 40 miles per hour in a posted 35 mile per hour zone, and initiated a traffic stop near the Jamestown Apartments.

The officer then noticed a donut spare tire on the rear driver’s side. He made contact with the driver, identified as Patrick Lavey, 26. of 11 Milton Avenue in Cranston. Lavey stated he was coming from a friend’s house, and was heading to his brother’s home in Warwick. He also mentioned that he had worked earlier in the evening for a catering company at an event in Little Compton, and on his way home got a flat tire.

During the conversation, Officer Kay noticed a strong smell of alcohol emanating from the driver, who also had bloodshot, watery eyes and slurred speech. He denied having any alcoholic beverages but the odor became increasingly stronger as he spoke.

Officer Kay asked the suspect to perform a series of standardized sobriety tests, which he agreed to. He also asked Lavey if he would take a preliminary breath test in his cruiser, which he refused.

After attempting to complete the tests, and based on Officer Kay’s experience, Lavey was advised that he was being placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence. He was handcuffed, read his rights, placed in a cruiser and transported to headquarters where he refused another chemical breath test.

Lavey was issued a citation for driving under the influence second offense, a refusal to submit to a chemical test, and laned roadway violations. He was later released to a sober adult.

SHOPLIFTING

Officer Mitchel Voyer responded to the Bald Hill Road Kohls on September 13 at 5:15 p.m. for a report of a suspected shoplifter in custody.

Upon arriving at the store Officer Voyer met with the store’s loss prevention agents, who had a female identified as Jennifer Prezioso, 34, of 299 Westerly Bradford Road in Westerly, detained in their office.

Loss prevention told the officer that they observed Prezioso make several fast selections in the Fragrance, Mens Jewelry, and Clothing departments. She then went to the changing rooms with what appeared to be an empty purse, and remained there for a short period of time. Once she exited, it appeared that the empty purse was now full.

A loss prevention member checked the changing room, and noticed cut off tags laying on the floor, and no other items present. Prezioso was then seen passing all points of sale without attempting to pay and exited the store.

Once outside, security approached her and escorted her back into the store. Located within the purse was jewelry, a watch, men’s and women’s fragrance, and clothing valued at $313.45 in total.

Prezioso was placed in handcuffs and transported to police headquarters. After running background checks, it was discovered she had a warrant for larceny out of North Attleboro. She was held for the bail commissioner as a probation violator, and then transported to the ACI.

Prezioso was charged with shoplifting felony, due to a charge from the Johnston Police Department in which she plead nolo contender on August 9, 2016 for which she received a one year suspended sentence and one year probation.

Mr. Gilchrist's head and back didn't hurt enough if he could still yell about it. This oxygen thief has a history of "sticky fingers" going back to 2010, including larceny, domestic larceny, bad checks and receiving stolen goods- it would behoove the neighbors to continue to keep an eye on him if he comes back around after getting out of the "Cranston Hilton".
