Cornhole tourney honors fireman, benefits memorial fund

This past weekend, the Crowne Plaza played host to a cornhole tournament to support a fallen fireman and an organization that helps firefighters both physically and mentally.

Mike Cabral, event organizer and a retired Warwick Fire Department Lieutenant, organized the event in the honor and memory of his former firefighting partner Justin Rocha.

“I really appreciate the people that helped out and made this possible,” Cabral said. “The Crowne Plaza really took care of us.”

Rocha died on Oct. 26 of last year at the age of 43.

Prior to that, Rocha had benefited from help from the Warwick Fire Department’s Peer Support Team, a group set up to help those on the team and create a network of medical professionals.

“They were instrumental in helping my husband,” Jessica Rocha, Justin’s wife, said.

Tim Souza and Mike Cardoso ended up winning the cornhole tournament, with Joe Aschettino and Manny Salemma finishing as runners-up.

Overall, the event raised more than $2,000 for the Justin P. Rocha Memorial Fund, as well as the Peer Support Team. According to Jessica, the memorial fund is used to help out Justin’s favorite charities.

“It was an incredible outpouring of support,” Jessica said.

According to Cabral, next year’s event may be in the spring, in order to “spread out” the amount of time in between that and the Warwick Fire Department Golf Tournament, held every year on Sept. 11.

Those interested in donating to the Peer Support Team can contact Todd Berthiaume at 401-529-6963.
