Marilyn S. Creta passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Brentwood Nursing Home in Warwick on January 11, 2024. Marilyn, or “Mel” as she was called by her late husband Dave and by many friends and coworkers was born in Providence on October 16, 1934. She was the daughter of the late Thomas E Scanlon, Sr and Mary (Varley) Scanlon.
Her family moved to the Conimicut section of Warwick when she was young and lived in Warwick her whole life.
Marilyn was the beloved wife of David F Creta for 42 years before his passing unexpectedly in June of 1997. They met at Gorton High School and became high school sweethearts before tying the knot in 1956.
She is survived by two sons: David R (Debbie) and Stephen and two grandchildren David R Jr. and Courtney Beth, and one great granddaughter Cali.
Marilyn is survived by her sister Patricia Papa and predeceased by her brother Thomas Scanlon, and sisters Monica Kagan and Beatrice Alfano.
Marilyn worked for the Warwick School Department starting in 1967 as a school lunch aid. She eventually advanced to become a teacher’s aide in Special Education. Her years of service to the students of Warwick began at Oakland Beach Elementary School, then onto Lippitt Elementary School and then onto Warwick Veterans Memorial High School before retiring in January of 1997. She loved her job working with her students who needed that little extra push, with many of them moving on and working in great jobs and living a great life. She loved going to work every day and had a great number of coworkers who she loved dearly and especially loved to make the coffee in the morning and clean the pot in the afternoon. A special shoutout to her friend Jane who went to see my mom on her last day. She loved you so much.
Her funeral will be held on Thursday January 18, 2024, at 8:30 a.m. in the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Spring Green, Warwick. Visitation will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Rita’s Church, 722 Oakland Beach Avenue, Warwick, Burial will be in Quidnesett Memorial Cemetery, North Kingstown,
