The Cranston West boys volleyball team is on a revenge tour this spring after falling in the Division II Championship last season and has rolled to a 3-0 start.

After beating Woonsocket 3-0 in the opener, The Falcons would then edge powerhouse Barrington in five sets before beating Central 3-1 on Monday.

Leading the way for West are returners Christopher Harvey and Christian Mak, who were key pieces to last year’s starting lineup. Also stepping up into larger roles have been Logan Reed and Jordan Cunha, while some newcomers have already made an impact.

“We’ve got a great, talented group of seniors that have come back but we also have kids that played JV last year that are great defensively. I can switch kids in and out, they don’t give up and they keep pushing. They’re determined to win,” said West coach Jenn Ferencko.

Harvey leads the team with 41 kills while Mak has 33 and Cunha 24. Mak also has recorded 12 blocks, while Reed has racked up 28 digs on defense.

The win against Barrington could have big playoff implications in the long run, as the Falcons and Eagles are legitimate title contenders in DII, along with defending champion Lincoln and East Providence, who has also had an impressive start.

“(Barrington is) going to be one of the top teams in our division so to get a win against them is great. The next time we see them, they’re going to be better, we’ll be better, so it should be a really good matchup the second time around,” said Ferencko.

After falling in a heartbreaking finale last year, the returning senior class is hungry to get back to the title game and take home the prize before graduation.

“They really want to get back to the championship, they really want to win the championship. They were disappointed to come up so short. They have made it a goal this year,” Ferencko said.

West will next take on East Providence on Friday and then will turn around for a championship rematch against the Lions on Sunday at home.
