Fire, police celebrate promotions, retirements at ceremonies
On Jan. 29, Mayor Scott Avedisian and Fire Chief Edmund Armstrong led the Warwick Fire Department’s promotional ceremony, as well as honored five members of the department on their retirement. The mayor also joined Col. Stephen McCartney for a promotion ceremony for the Warwick Police Department on Jan. 28.
Both ceremonies were held in City Council Chambers inside Warwick City Hall, and Board of Safety Chairwoman Leslie Walaska Baxter, member James Paolucci and member Thomas McGovern were also in attendance.
The Fire Department’s ceremony featured a processional by the department’s honor guard, and greetings from Deputy Chief Francis Colantonio and Avedisian, as well as Lt. John Halloran singing the national anthem. Father Peter Mongeon and Father Robert Marciano, the department’s chaplains, delivered the invocation and benediction, respectively.
During the ceremony, Avedisian and Armstrong administered the oath of office to Rescue Lieutenants Carl Morlock and Andrew Sutton, and Lieutenants Matthew Richards, James Conley, Steven Cullen and George Lusignan.
Additionally, Jonathan Faucher was sworn in as rescue captain, Gary Oatley took the oath of office as captain, James McLaughlin took the oath of assistant chief, Thomas Jessop was sworn in as battalion chief, Jason Umbenhauer was promoted to EMS coordinator and Father Marciano was sworn in as a deputy chief.
In recognition of their retirement, Lieutenants Ronald Driscoll, Jeffrey Hall, Stephen Campagnone and Kevin Armstrong, along with EMS Coordinator Joseph Pfeiler were honored for their service.
The police ceremony last Tuesday also featured an invocation and benediction by Marciano, police department chaplain, and remarks by both Avedisian and McCartney.
The oath of office was administered to Robert S. Nelson for promotion to the rank of major, Bradford E. Connor as captain, Joseph F. Hopkins as lieutenant and Joel P. Thomas as sergeant. A presentation of commendations and awards followed.
