Lady Titans win finale

The Toll Gate girls soccer team ended its up-and-down regular season on a high note, winning its final two games against Lincoln School and Johnston.

The Titans played arguably their best game of the season on the road against the Panthers in the finale, cruising to a 3-0 shutout win.

Cassie Cirella led the way with two goals in the first half to give Toll Gate the advantage at the break. Although Johnston threatened for much of the second half, Catelyn Kuncio was able to net a late goal to set the score at 3-0 and put the game out of reach for the Panthers.

“It was really special to win here and to win on Senior Night. We’ve had some struggles this year, that’s no secret to anyone, so for them to come out and win these last two games is great. We started nine seniors on senior night, some of them didn’t get to play very much this year, so for them to finish that way was great to see. It was awesome,” said Toll Gate coach Lonna Razza of the club’s finish.

Razza appreciated the impact that her senior core made during its time on the pitch and will miss them moving forward.

“They are the best. We had some seniors that had never really played before but wanted to come out and try out for the team this year and they loved it. That makes me happy because happy players, happy coach. It meant a lot, they made a lot of new friends and they loved putting on the uniform. It’s bittersweet, I wish them the best and I know they are going to do great with whatever they do. I’m going to miss them,” said Razza.

Razza also saw a steady improvement in her club this season, especially in the final two contests.

“There were definite improvements from the first couple weeks of the season until now. In the second half of the season we won two games and tied two games, in the first half we lost all but one,” said Razza. “It was great to see especially considering the amount of young kids that are returning next year. Hopefully we can carry that over into next year and be ready to compete with the top of the pack.”

As the Titans get set to graduate their seniors and hand the keys over to the younger players, Razza hopes that the returners will remember what victory feels like and carry the momentum of the strong finish into next year.

“Winning is a great feeling, I remember how excited they were after the Senior Night win, and they wanted to get right back to practice the next morning,” said Razza. “Hopefully they remember that next year, I’m sure they will.”
