Mayor to talk about building airport consensus to RI Mediators

Take a decade-long conflict, multiple stakeholders, issues involving neighborhood protection, environmental protections, open space, and commercial growth and development, and a high level of tension, and you have a recipe ripe for disaster or – mediation.

The expansion of the runway at T.F. Green State Airport contains all the elements mediators have been trained to deal with: a highly charged situation with a long history of conflict.

Today, May 15, Mayor Scott Avedisian will be the keynote speaker at the RI Mediators Association’s second annual Celebrate Mediation RI 2012 dinner event held at the Eleven Forty Nine Restaurant on Division Street in Warwick. The mayor will address the process of building consensus when multiple parties are involved, and give the background that led to the recent agreement between the Board of the RI Airport Corporation and the Warwick City Council. As a six-term mayor of the state’s second largest city, Avedisian has been an important player in the conflict and an advocate for his city.

Family Court Chief Judge Haiganush Bedrosian will introduce Avedisian.

Celebrate Mediation RI 2012 is open to the public, as well as mediators and those interested in conflict resolution.

The RI Mediators Association is a non-profit association dedicated to serving and supporting Rhode Island Mediators. The association is committed to providing a forum for mediators to share experiences, learn from each other, and work together to promote the advancement of mediation in Rhode Island.

Their mission is "to promote mediation as a profession and as a form of dispute resolution in Rhode Island, to advance the field of mediation towards clearer and higher standards of ethics and accountability, and to promote education and training in mediation". They do this by providing workshops, roundtable discussions and informational meetings on various mediation and practice related topics throughout the year.
