To the Editor:
As our world confronts the threat of global warming, a major source has received very little attention. Factory farming produces almost all the meat raised for food worldwide and it has had a detrimental effect on our environment. Raising animals in confined, overcrowded conditions has led to the release of massive quantities of methane into the atmosphere. Methane is responsible for much of the rapid increase in global temperatures because it traps heat 21 times more effectively than carbon dioxide.
Many concerned individuals have cut back or eliminated meat from their diet because of the cruel and abusive conditions under which animals are raised for consumption. As we become more aware of the major threat posed by industrial animal production to our climate, we just might want to consider joining them.
