Pats swim past rival Titans

The Pilgrim girls swim team beat crosstown rival Toll Gate 57-30 last week in a league showdown at the McDermott Pool.

The Pats have jumped out to a strong start this winter as they continue to build numbers in their program. Pilgrim improved to 3-1 with the win.

“Each time out they’re improving their times. They’re all willing to try things that they do not normally do. Keaney Bayha has stepped up. Allison Shaheen and Taylor Mooney have both stepped up to do the IM. Maddie Ventura is doing the 500 and every meet she’s getting faster. They’ve been phenomenal,” said Pilgrim coach Dori LaBella. “We also have a lot of new swimmers that have joined this year and they’ve been great.”

LaBella is also coaching the newly-formed Pilgrim-Toll Gate boys co-op team, which features five swimmers from Pilgrim and two from Toll Gate. The team is 1-1 this season, beating the Tolman-Shea-St. Patrick’s team 39-25 and falling to East Providence. The goal is for the numbers to grow after doubling from last year and to see the co-op develop into a sustainable unit moving forward.

“They’re very excited and enthusiastic so we’re hoping to keep it going for next year,” said LaBella.

Toll Gate is still searching for its first win of the season and fell to 0-3 with the loss.

Here are some of the results from the meet last week:

Taylor Mooney, Allison Shaheen, Keaney Bayha and Charlotte McPherson combined to win the 200 medley relay for Pilgrim, while teammate Zoe Anderson won the 200 freestyle. Mooney would later win the individual medley.

Pilgrim’s Alexia Steger won the 50 freestyle, while Toll Gate’s Katelyn Watson won the 500 freestyle. Watson also won the back stroke followed by teammate Samantha Lin who won the breast stroke.

Bayha, Mooney, McPherson and Madison Ventura were part of the relay team that won the 400 free relay. Watson, Gabby Steger, Tate Payne and Alyssa Jencks won the 200 free relay for the Titans.

Pilgrim’s Hannah Fitzpatrick took second in the 200 free while Shaheen placed second in the individual medley. Ainsley Ottilige placed second in the 50 free for Pilgrim.

Mooney, Shaheen, Bayha and Marcella Leberon finished second in the 200 free relay while Ventura took second in the back stroke. Shaheen finished second in the breast stroke for Pilgrim.

Toll Gate’s Chloe Pena took second in the 100 free while Pena, Gabby Steger, Lin and Emily Furtado took second in the 400 relay.
