Philip Earl Palmquist Sr., 94, of Coventry died Friday, August 17, 2018 at the Coventry Center Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation in Coventry. He was the beloved husband of seventy-two years to Doris Frances (Angell) Palmquist.
Born in Aponaug, he was a son of the late Clarence V. and Anna (Ingeborg) Palmquist. Philip was employed as a Submarine Builder at General Dynamics in Groton, CT for thirty years, retiring in 1989. During World War II, Philip honorably served in the United States Army Air Corps. He enlisted on January 11, 1943 and was discharged on October 25, 1945. Philip owned seven acres of land in Coventry where he lightly farmed raising cows, sheep, goats, chickens and pigs. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Groton, CT and was a Deacon at several of the churches he attended over the years. After retiring from General Dynamics, Philip and Doris traveled across the country in a RV and later settled in Leesburg, Florida for twenty years. Philip was the epitome of a “Family Man.” He was a devoted husband and dedicated father and he cherished time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his beloved wife, Doris, Philip is survived by four loving children: Doris F. Raehl (Tom) of Columbia, SC, Philip E. Palmquist, Jr. (Linda) of Coventry, Anita L. Braden (Jim) of Cassopolis, MI, Paul A. Palmquist (Betsey) of Rumney, NH and Peter J. Palmquist (Carey) of Annapolis, MD; a sister, Ruth Durlacher of Warwick; thirteen grandchildren: Melissa, Timothy, Joseph, Rosalie, Andy, April, Samuel, Jeremy, Steven, Heather, Caleb, Benjamin and Seth; and sixteen great-grandchildren. He was the sister of the late Caroline Palmquist.
His Funeral Service followed by Military Honors will be conducted on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 1 p.m. in the Quidnessett Baptist Church, 6356 Post Road, North Kingstown.
