Polls open at 7 a.m. Tuesday for Presidential Preference Primary

Posted

Krista Tracy will get her maiden flight as the Warwick director of elections at Tuesday’s Presidential Preference Primary, and it doesn’t look like she will encounter any headwinds. Regardless of how Warwick or for that matter the state votes, the contest for party nominations is over. Donald Trump has the delegates for the Republican nomination and President Joe Biden is lined up as the Democratic candidate. But that’s not to say there are no races. Voters will decide on party delegates.

And while there is no nail biting over who will win the party nominations that could throw a spotlight on Rhode Island, Warwick voters are watching and voting.  As of Monday afternoon a total of 358 had cast mail or early ballots since March 13, Tracy reported. Early voting is available at Warwick City Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays except for this Friday (Good Friday) which will be a half day.

Nine Warwick polls will open on primary preference day, Tuesday April 2, at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Each poll will be staffed by six supervisors and a moderator and a clerk. Tracy said she had no difficulty filling the positions with all but one person having previously done the job. Clerks and moderators are paid $225 for the day. Supervisors make $175. Recruiting sufficient staff may be more of an issue for the general election when Tracy will need 136 supervisors and 68 moderators and clerks.

Tracy, a native of Levittown , PA, has worked a variety of municipal jobs in South Kingstown and Charlestown since coming to Rhode Island. She was Westerly’s registered clerk of elections when she applied for the vacant Warwick post. Westerly has about 20,000 registered voters as compared to Warwick’s 66,034. Westerly has seven polling locations, Warwick has 34.
