Remembering Warwick Downs
To the Editor:
Your story about Warwick Downs was extremely interesting to me.
My newly widowed mother and I moved there in 1930. Our address was 3 Scandia Avenue. (That cottage is still occupied.) My aunt and uncle, Annie and Joe Lizotte, owned and operated a grocery store on Naushon Ave. (We shared a backyard.)
Uncle Joe and my maternal grandfather made some improvements to our new home, enlarging the “parlor,” installing a flush toilet and digging a small cellar.
The land was owned by the Swedish Working Men’s Association. A Mr. Phil Krantz went from door to door to collect the rent.
I lived there until, at age 20, I reported for active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard.
