Rep. Camille F.J. Vella-Wilkinson (D-Dist. 21, Warwick) has graduated from the Eastern Leadership Academy, a fellowship program designed to enhance the leadership abilities of state officials from all three branches of government. The fellowship took place at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia during the last week of August.
The purpose of the fellowship is to improve understanding of key regional public policies. Participants discussed a wide variety of topics, such as "Crisis Communications," "Sustainable Energy Models" and "Debunking Political Deception and Viral Deception (Fake News)." Between the sessions, participants spoke about the unintended aftermath from legalizing marijuana, the opioid crisis, prison reform, school funding and a host of other hot topics.
"I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge presented by this fellowship," Vella-Wilkinson said in a statement. "The tools shared with participants were not highbrow academic theory that looks good in a conference room but have no real-life application in the State House. I am looking forward to using these newly honed skills during the upcoming 2019-2020 Session."
Each year, as many as 30 state and provincial officials from the 19 Eastern region member jurisdictions gather in Philadelphia for the Robert J. Thompson Eastern Leadership Academy. This select group of state officials, from all three branches, receive training to enhance their leadership skills and study the most significant issues facing states today.
