RI Table Tennis hosts Junior, Senior High championships this Saturday

Posted

The Rhode Island Table Tennis Association (RITTA), located at the Manville Community Center, 30 Railroad Street, Manville, R.I., is hosting a Rhode Island State Juniors and Rhode Island State High School Championship this Saturday.

Tournament director and Warwick resident, Steve Hopkins, is a five-time Rhode Island State champion in Table Tennis, and has been helping run these events for 10 years. Hopkins is excited because this is the first time RITTA is sponsoring a high school tournament since opening 70 years ago. The high school tournament is a three-man-team tournament, facing off in singles matches to the best of three. Warwick students Abraham Tardiff, Liam Cannon, and Samuel Barmonyallah will be representing Hendricken, currently ranked as second seed, behind La Salle Academy at number one.

The junior events include age brackets 10-and-under, 12-and-under, 15-and-under, 18-and-under, and an 18-and-under girls-only event to compete in round-robin singles.

Warwick residents and St. Peter School students, Ethan Aldrich and Alex Hopkins, will also be present at the event. Both Aldrich and Hopkins will be competing in the 10-and-under bracket. Alex Hopkins, who is the son of Tournament director, Steve Hopkins, is the top seed in his division, leaving it open for a storied "like father-like son" ending.

All singles events will begin with round robin groups of three to five players with the top one or two of each group advancing to single elimination. All matches will be best three out of five (11 point) games

The tournament is open to the public for viewing and any residents of Rhode Island under the age of 18 are welcome to sign up. Entries can be made through the website at www.ritta.org or on-site, provided that players arrive and register at least 30 minutes before an event begins. The tournament begins 9 a.m. with the team events beginning at 10:30 a.m.

I won the RI high school table tennis championship in 1974. The finals were held at Pilgrim High School. What did I get for winning this tournament that lasted a few weeks? Nothing, not even a trophy.
