What does it take to be an author?

Pre-school students at Westbay Community Action Children’s Center got answers to that question Thursday – National Author’s Day – when Linda Brennan of Coventry visited the center and read one of her illustrated children’s books. Brennan, a native of New Jersey who came to the University of Rhode Island, where she met her husband, has published 27 books in 30 years. Some have been children’s books, but many have been non-fiction works on such topics as climate change and why leaves change color. The kids, who have been talking about writing and how to tell stories, listened intently and, as Brennan found, “were on target with their questions.” Yet the best part of the morning came when it was time for cookies and milk. Brennan skipped the milk but couldn’t resist the chocolate chip cookies. (Warwick Beacon photos)
