Mayor Joseph J. Solomon recently stopped by the Salter Grove Park, off Narragansett Parkway, where over $100,000 worth of grant-funded improvements are underway. City workers are providing the required grant match with in-kind labor, including the site clearing that began last week, grading and finish site work.
The playground will offer better accessibility via a path to accommodate wheelchair access to the playground and a dedicated handicapped parking space on the entry road. Enhanced landscaping will make the area more attractive. Modern swings, a climbing structure, slide, pod steppers and more will provide terrific opportunities for families to enjoy spending time together in the great outdoors, the Mayor noted. Significant safety improvements, including surfacing installed under all elevated play components, are also included within the scope of the project.
The improvements are being funded through a $100,000 Rhode Island Department of Recreation Grant. The Rhode Island Foundation has also awarded a grant to the Friends of Salter Grove (FOSG) to design and fabricate new benches.
