Something wrong with judicial system

To the Editor:

On March 5, 2017, at the Rite Aid located at 1201 Warwick Ave., 18-year-old Rite Aid employee Alyssa Garcia was brutally attacked. The coward snuck up behind her and stabbed her at least eight times (Chief McCartney, Warwick Police Department) before he was tackled and brought down by two men, one an employee and one a customer.

She is still in the hospital going through days of pain and sadness, hopefully recovering fully. Being only 18 years old, she has a lifetime ahead that now will always be haunted by the ugly face of this disturbed attacker who has forever changed the course of her life. She may have nightmares of his horrid attack and will forever be reminded of this assault as evidenced by the scars.

He claims this was all brought on because his “Nana” died and he had to change his living arrangements. Let’s all give him a big “boo-hoo.”

He was taken into custody and put on suicide watch. Let’s have another round of “boo-hoos.” After all, we wouldn’t want him to strangle himself with his jammies. He went to court and was given a get out of jail card for $10,000, and if he gets out he can live as a free man at his cousin’s house (assuming he gets the pretty anklet). Well, isn’t that special? Hmm?

This is an outrage. This is about a young girl fighting for her life. Her parents, family and friends are scared for her, praying day and night that she makes it. At this time Alyssa is out of danger but faces a life of hardships yet unknown with many crosses to carry. And her attacker gets nothing more at this time than the ole slap on the wrist? There is something terribly wrong with our judicial system.

Intent to harm, but attempt to kill; what is the difference in this situation? Gallant clearly expressed his intent to stab with the butcher knife he purchased at a local Wal-Mart. Clearly obvious to the general public, a vicious person with clear malice and forethought to do harm, perhaps murder.

In my opinion he should be thrown in prison and left with the other inmates who would love to take good care of him. Never mind this suicide watch, beaucoup taxpayer dollars, crap!

Another item of note, and this goes out to the women who felt the keen need to protest on a Sunday not too long ago. You marched in front of a man’s house because he publicly voiced his opinion about the way women dress. Where were all of you on the day this vermin was allowed the option to post bail? Was this not worthy of protest? Or was there a sale on yoga pants? Perhaps it was on the day you all paraded around with your “pink hats” on?

For those of you who do care, please continue to pray for Alyssa and for her attacker. He still has a choice. It is, after all, what God expects of us and it is what is right.

P.S. I am curious to find out what Mayor Avedisian and the Rite Aid corporation has planned for the two heroes that literally saved Alyssa’s life.

Editor’s note: Mayor Scott Avedisian said last week that the two men who came to Alyssa’s aid would be recognized at a police ceremony to be announced.

The Mayor should give these two heroes that saved the life of an innocent victim, the key to the city.

The good people at Rite Aid should put up the money to pay for it.

That would be a win-win-win at no cost to the taxpayers.

The heroes get honored. Rite Aid gets a ton of good publicity and the City of Warwick gets some well needed good-press.

And it wouldn't cost the taxpayers a dime.

It's pretty outrageous when the press won't even print the name of the judge who freed Jacob Gallant on $10,000 bail. This stabbing followed in the wake of TWO drunk driving crashes on Warwick Ave, resulting in TWO DEAD. Megan White is free on $15,000 bail, and her victim Daniel McCarthy is dead. Justin Preston crashed his SUV, and 8 year old passenger Jahmeer Valles-Halloway is dead. These victims also deserve justice. But God forbid we enact tougher laws to protect the innocent.

We are all praying for you, Alyssa. You will come back from this, however bleak the future may seem.

Gallant was arraigned before the Hon. Judge Mary McCaffrey...You would have to ask her or AG Petey Kilmartin about the bail hearing, the amount, or why he was not remanded or held for observation pending his next court appearance some time in April...You might have to wait for AG Petey to return from his home in Florida for a comment.
