Toasting our veterans
DESERT STORM REMEMBERED: Retired Naval Captain Louis Normand and retired Major Army Reservist Dr. Paul McKenney found plenty to talk about over coffee. Normand, during his naval career, served with the Strategic Sea Lift and during Desert Storm worked in placing reservists back in their civilian jobs after their tour of duty. McKenney served in Saudi Arabia in a desert field hospital where Iraqi prisoners on war were treated.
VETS BREAKFAST WELCOME: Pat and Rich Masterson, at right, found an enthusiastic welcoming committee when they arrived Saturday morning for the Veterans Day breakfast co-hosted by Bishop Hendricken High School and Iggy’s Boardwalk Restaurant in Oakland Beach. There to greet them from left were Father Robert Marciano, president of the school; David Gravino, co-owner of Iggy’s and former Warwick Mayor and RIPTA CEO Scott Avedisian. Masterson served in the Army. He worked on helicopters while serving in Vietnam. (Warwick Beacon photos)
KP CREW: The Iggy’s team behind the breakfast of bacon, sausage, french toast, hash browns and scrambled eggs included from left; Juan Morales, Geovanni Lopez, Manny Ventura and chef John Bordieri.
AIMING FOR WEST POINT: Hendricken senior Charles Kretzer has his sights set on West Point. He said he is fully qualified, having passed academic and athletic requirements, but has yet to be nominated as a student. He was one of several Hendricken students assisting with the breakfast for veterans at Iggy’s Boardwalk. Among the veterans attending was Senator Jack Reed, a West Point grad, who has advised Kretzer. Reed could not nominate Kretzer as he lives in North Attleboro.
