The Toll Gate boys basketball team is looking to build some momentum after getting off to a 1-4 start in league play in Division II.

The Titans most recently took on Times Squared Academy and dropped a tough 64-61 decision. Jack Colvin led the way with 17 points scored while Dylan Perreault added 16 along with 20 rebounds. Will Goodine also reached double figures with 11 points scored.

Toll Gate lost to St. Ray’s 94-34 the previous day and was paced by Goodine with 12 points. Perreault hauled in eight rebounds.

The Titans are continuing to rebuild their roster this winter, fielding a team made up primarily of underclassmen.

“We’re 1-4 but we could easily be 3-2. We lost two winnable games. We entered halftime against Times2 with a 10-point lead, but they started shooting, hit a few 3s and then it turned into a deficit by the end of the third quarter. This is what tends to happen when you have a young group. We’re smaller than most teams we face and there are some very good teams in Division II. It’s been an uphill battle,” said Toll Gate coach Richard Grenier.

Leading the way has been Perreault, the team’s senior captain. He currently leads the team in points per game (13) and rebounds (15).

“There is a lot of pressure on Dylan Perreault and he’s giving all he’s got,” said Grenier, who has also seen an emergence from two other key starters. “Slowly we have guys starting to come around. Jack Colvin has found his shooting touch. Will Goodine is getting comfortable. We’re slowly coming into ours.”

The Titans will next be facing undefeated Johnston on Thursday and will have another big game when they face rival Pilgrim next week.

Grenier is looking for his players to remain focused and make good decisions on the court.

“We just need more consistency. Slowing the game down, seeing things and not rushing passes. If we can do that against better opponents, then we will be better prepared for teams in our boat,” said Grenier. “The kids keep working, they just keep showing up and working. They know what they’re facing, but they keep working hard.”
